Frogger

Frogger – another great retro video game classic!

Frogger is of course one of the retro video game classics that really stands out when you think of games from the 80s and 90s- among the rest might be Pac-Man, Duck Hunt, Mario, Centipede, Asteroids and many others. Frogger is a fun game with a simple concept – get your little frogs across the street. Easy, right? It might be easy if the path wasn’t infested with cars, streams, moving logs, hungry crocodiles, and sinking turtles.

Originally titled “Highway Crossing Frog”, the Sega executives decided Frogger was a more appropriate title for the game- and the name is considerably catchier as well. The goal is to navigate your frogs (three, five, or seven depending on the difficulty setting) to their home slots on the top of the screen safely. Each frog successfully navigated home awards extra points to the player. As the player finishes each level, the color scheme changes and the paths some of the “enemies” takes differ and speed up. The ways to die include being run over, eaten by a crocodile, drowning, running out of time, etc.

No retro video game collection would be complete without proper homage to Frogger. Go ahead and play a few levels of Frogger to get a feel for what we remember video games to be like circa 1981.
